Pat Spurgin was an 18-year-old college student at Murray State University in Kentucky. She had no international experience but won the first gold medal offered in this event at the Olympics. She later became a college rifle coach at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. The bronze medalist Wu Xiaoxuan became the first female to win a gold medal for China when she won the women’s small-bore event in 1984.
