Biography

Over a career that spanned more than 20 years Serbian sports shooter Mirjana Horvat won 67 international medals, including 17 at the World and European Championships. Horvat represented JSD Partizan throughout her career, becoming the most decorated female athlete at the club. In 1969 she joined the Yugoslav national team, winning a team silver and bronze at the European Championships that year. The following year Horvat won two team gold medals at the World Championships in Phoenix, Arizona.

Horvat continued to have success throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including winning gold at the 1986 World Championships in Suhl, East Germany in the 50 metres small-bore rifle prone team event. She had individual success at the Mediterranean Games with gold in 1979, followed by silver in 1987, both in small-bore rifle events. During this time Horvat also competed at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, placing eighth in the 50 metres small-bore rifle three positions.

Whilst still competing Horvat became a coach, working with the national team. In the 1990s she was both a competitor and the team coach for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, representing Bosnia and Herzegovina. At the Games she once again finished eighth, this time in the 10 metres air rifle. Horvat finished her career with more than 400 medals from domestic competitions, along with 23 national titles, including 16 individual wins. She was honoured with dozens of awards, including the National Sports Award.
