Born in Germany, Alf Mayer moved to Canada in 1957 and settled in Ontario, where he soon took up sport shooting. He joined the Canadian national team in 1964 and first saw major international success at the 1967 Pan American Games, where he took gold individually and silver with the team in the small-bore rifle, prone event. In the three positions version at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, he came in 38th out of 62 competitors, while at the 1971 Pan Americans, he won bronze in the prone individually and with the team, while coming in sixth in the three positions. His participated in his second Olympics in Munich in 1972, coming in 42nd in the three positions and 47th in the prone.
Mayer went on to represent Canada in three more editions of the Pan Americans, taking bronze with the three-positions team in 1975. He captured silver in that event in 1979, coming eighth individually, and winning bronze in the individual prone. Finally, in 1983, he won silver with the 10 metre air rifle team and bronze with the small-bore three positions squad. He continued to win medals at the World Cup through 1985 and won a total of 31 Canadian national and 63 Ontario provincial titles over his career. He was inducted into the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame in 1995.
