Biography

Michalakis Tymbios was a member of the Greek national shooting team for two decades, competing in competitions across Europe. After the establishment of both the Cyprus National Olympic Committee and the Cyprus Shooting Federation, Tymbios started to compete for the island nation in the skeet event. In 1982 he finished 10th at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, before making his first appearance at the Olympics two years later, placing 69th at the Los Angeles Games. In 1988 Tymbios finished 20th at the Seoul Olympics and had the honour of being the flagbearer for Cyprus at the Opening Ceremony. One year earlier, he arguably had the best result of his career when he won gold at the Mediterranean Games in Latakia, Syria. After his sporting career Tymbios also served two three-year terms as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greek Chamber of Commerce (1988–91, 1991–94). Following his death in 2019 the provincial shooting championships in Nicosia were named in his honour.
