The strongest European bantamweight at the time, Ulderico Sergo defeated the taller Jackie Wilson for the 1936 Olympic title in Berlin. He then confirmed his status by winning the 1937 and 1939 European Championships, having earlier been a losing semi-finalist in 1934. With the 1940 Olympics cancelled due to the war, Sergo turned professional. His career of 15 known fights saw him try for the Italian title six times - all in vain. He retired in 1952, and later emigrated to the United States.
