Alfred Black was a regular winner at the Clay Bird Shooting Association championships held at the Middlesex Gun Club in the early part of the 20th century. Along with George Pinchard, Black was a member of the Great Britain I trap team at the 1908 London Olympics, but the two men were reserves and did not take part. At Stockholm four years later, however, the two men got their chance to perform in the individual trap competition, but Black was one of three Britons (with Alexander Maunder and John Goodwin) not to get past the first round of 20 shots, and Black’s score of 11 saw him classified 53rd. Five months after the Olympic competition, Alfred Black died at his home in Manor Park, Essex.
