Hwang Eul-Su was a Korean boxer who attended Meiji University and represented Japan during the colonial era. Although he was not the only Korean member of the 1932 Japanese Olympic team, he was actually the first to compete, losing in round one on the first day of the Los Angeles Olympics. From 1929-31 he won three consecutive titles at the Japanese championships in the lightweight division (1930-31 for the All Japan Amateur Fighting Federation). In 1940 he was coach of the Japanese national team, which mainly consisted of Korean nationals.
After Korean liberation, Hwang lived in South Korea, but when the Korean War broke out, changed sides. He became one of the most important boxing officials of the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea (North) and was active as a member of the PRK’s Olympic Committee.
