The son of a Cumbrian sweet shop owner, engineer Victor Huthart became a leading British clay pigeon shooter in the 1950s and 60s.
Huthart was in the Great Britain team at the 1958 World Shooting Championships in Moskva (Moscow) and led for the first two days of shooting with a British record 196 hits. He finished fifth overall. At the 1960 Olympics he finished equal 12th in the trap competition and the following year won the English Grand Prix clay pigeon competition at Bisley.
In a competition at the headquarters of the Beverley Gun Club in 1961, Huthart was beaten into second place by the future Formula One world champion Jackie Stewart. Along with Stewart, Huthart was on the original short-list of seven for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, but neither made the final squad. Despite not going to the 1964 or 1968 Olympics, Huthart went to the 1970 Worlds in Arizona and led the reigning Olympic champion Bob Braithwaite after the first round.
