An engineer and surveyor for the Sleaford Rural District Council, William Marsden was also the honorary secretary of the Sleaford Miniature Rifle Shooting Club. Both Marsden and his wife Laura were keen shots and represented Lincolnshire at county level. It was very rare for the pair to venture out of the county for competitions.
Marsden, who won the 25-yard moving target bronze medal at the 1908 Olympics, retired as secretary of the Sleaford Club the following year. In 1912 he and his wife gave up competitive shooting for a short while, following the closure of the club, who presented Marsden with a memento of their appreciation for all he had done or rifle shooting in the area.
