James Milne

Although he was born in Guernsey, James Logie Milne’s parents were from Aberdeenshire, and his father William served with the Gordon Highlanders stationed in the Channel Islands at the time. James served as a second lieutenant with the Royal Garrison Artillery between 1914-22. Milne and his father were both Olympians and regular competitors at Bisley.

Milne junior was an excellent shot and was a member of the North London Rifle Club. He had a long and fine record at Bisley, and appeared in the final 100 of the King’s Prize many times in the 1920s and 30s and represented Scotland four times in the Mackinnon match. In 1937/38 Milne was adjutant of the Great Britain team that toured South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. He was elected onto the council of the National Rifle Association (NRA) in 1935 and continued until 1955 when he decided not to stand for re-election.

Milne was at one time a valuer for the Inland Revenue before starting his own practice. The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors named the James Logie Milne Prize in his honour. Milne stood as a liberal party candidate for the Aberdeen South constituency at the 1945 UK General Election, but finished third out of three in the polls.
