An engineer with the Marconi company for many years, John O’Leary was a member of both the Great Britain running target and trap teams at the 1924 Paris Olympics, and also competed in the individual trap event. He was regarded as one of the finest clay pigeon shots in England at the time.
Irish by descent, O’Leary represented Ireland in the triangular contest for the Elcho Shield at Bisley on many occasions. In 1938, O’Leary won the Albert Challenge Bowl, the most important event at the Hopton Match Rifle Championships at Bisley.
O’Leary was a member of the North London Rifle Club and was also the one-time honorary secretary of the British Trapshooting Association. He was appointed president of the Trim Rifle Club, County Meath, in the late 1950s.
