Sephton won the 1968 English Open skeet title and then went to Mexico for the first of his Olympic appearances. He added the 1971 English Open Grand Prix skeet trophy to his collection of silverware before winning the British Grand Prix the following year, when he then went to the München Games and was placed 16th. Sephton enjoyed his finest moment on the international stage at the 1973 World Championships at Melbourne when he won a bronze medal with the British team. Sephton gave up the sport after getting married in 1974. He temporarily came out of retirement in 1978 to enter the British Championships.
