The three medalists all tied with 195. In the shoot-off, 1970 World Champion Konrad Wirnhier (FRG), bronze medalist in 1968, went clean with a 25 string for the gold medal. The 1968 gold medalist, Yevgeny Petrov (URS) missed only one clay to win the silver over East German Michael Buchheim. The co-world record holder and 1971 World Champion, Yury Tsuranov disagreed with an early ruling on a lost bird, and walked off the field. A fiery debate followed and Tsuranov was penalized three clays for his actions. This brought his score down to 192 and ninth place, exactly three birds short of the shoot-off for the medals.
