Michael, father of Ralf Buchheim, won the bronze medal at the skeet event of the shooting competitions at the 1972 München Olympic Games. From 1970-72 he earned three East German national titles. In 1971 he also claimed two team silver medals in the skeet events at the Europeans and the Worlds. In 1975 he had his greatest moment winning the World Championships with the East German skeet team. He was inducted into the German Shooting Hall of Fame.
