Along with his brother Gusztáv, László Szomjas competed in shooting at the 1924 Paris Olympics, competing in three events. His best finish was sixth in the team running target, single shot event.
He and his brother followed in their father’s footsteps, researching bird behavior. In 1923, they received an Observer Diploma from the Hungarian Ornithologic Institute, studying birds and geese. After World War II László Szomjas was banned from his profession due to political reasons. In 1962 he became a professional hunter in Gombáspuszta. In the summer of 1968, he became very ill from a tick-borne cerebral inflammation. After a slow recovery, he continued to correspond with his associates concerning ornithology research.
