As a marksman, John Pierik was primarily active in skeet shooting. His most successful year internationally was in 1984. At the European Championships in Zaragoza, he placed 7th individually, and narrowly missed bronze with the Dutch team, ranking fourth. At the Los Angeles Olympics, he once more placed fourth individually. Pierik missed qualification for the 1988 Olympics after an administrative error prevented him from competing in qualifying competitions. In national competition, he rivalled with Eric Swinkels, and earned national titles in 1978 and 1980. Pierik was also active as a trainer, teaching among others 1995 European Champion Hennie Dompeling. Outside of shooting, John Pierik sold slot machines and later was a casino owner.
