Estonia-born shooter Pavel Lieth graduated from school in Riga. He studied at Riga Polytechnic Institute’s Department of Engineering from 1904-12 earning a diploma in civil engineering just like his brother Oskar. As a student Pavel joined the sports society Union and the Āgenskalns Rifle Society (Hagensberger. Schuetzengesellschaft zu Riga). He was already an experienced shooter, when he participated in the 1912 Olympic Games. But his results in the running target and trap events did not meet the expectations. At the 2nd All-Russian Olympiad held in Riga in 1914, he placed third in clay pigeon shooting as well as in running deer shooting.
Just like Harry Blaus, Lieth was an ice skater. He took part successfully in speed skating and ice sailing competitions. But his greatest success came when he competed as a gymnast at the All-Russian Championships in St. Petersburg in 1908. There, he won “Grand Gold Medal, Medal of Honour and the Traveling Award of Grand Duke Vladimir Romanov”.
His brother Oskar excelled particularly in athletics and acted as head of the athletics section of the Union sports club with Pavel as his deputy. Pavel married Blaus’ sister Katherine in 1914 and repatriated to Germany in 1939.
