Bernard Betke shot rapid-fire pistol at the 1924 Paris Olympics. At the time he was a gunnery sergeant in the US Marine Corps. Betke was apparently a career Marine from that time, as he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Full details cannot be found of his service record, however, on his World War I draft registration, Betke claimed an exemption from military service, based on having had a “previous bad discharge from the military” and for support of his wife and daughter. He was then a resident of Milwaukee and noted that he was not employed.
