At the time of the 1920 Olympics, Tom Brown was a first lieutenant in the 41st Infantry with the U.S. Army. In the running deer team event he was the top American shooter, although he brought up the rear of the team members in the military rifle event. Brown was promoted to captain in 1925. Prior to military service he was a teacher at public schools in Uffington, West Virginia.
