Allen Haas, whose last name was pronounced “Rayes,” grew up in sports, competing in track and wrestling in high school. He learned to shoot from his father, who was a skeet shooter at West Point. Haas entered the US Army when he was 19 and after finishing his tour of duty, remained in the US Army Reserve. He then attended the University of Florida, studying business. Haas won a gold medal in team trap at the 1987 Pan American Games, placing fourth in the individual event, and also won a bronze medal with the trap team at the 1987 World Championships.
