Joseph Lawless was a member of the 5th Massachusetts National Guard, for whom he commanded Company I of the 181st Regiment, when he competed at the 1920 Olympics. He shot at the Wakefield Range. Lawless served in World War I, and was on the AEF Rifle Team during the war. He died quite young from pneumonia.
