Harry Sears attended Boston Latin school and later Harvard College, graduating in 1893. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1896 and eventually took up a practice on the North Shore of Massachusetts. He served as a physician in the Spanish-American War, reaching the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He was then on the staff of Beverly Hospital for 20 years, serving as medical examiner for the Beverly region. In 1920 Sears suffered a nervous breakdown and was hospitalized for several months. His wife then sustained a serious illness, and on the day of her surgery, Harry Sears went to his medical office and took his own life by shooting himself through the heart.
Originally listed incorrectly as Henry Francis Sears, also a doctor born in Boston at about the same time, but were later contacted by relatives of the correct Harry Edward Sears.
