From Flushing, New York, Walter Tomsen shot a Winchester Model 52 rifle at the 1948 Olympics. He used it well to take the silver medal with a score of 599 of a possible 600, missing only once – that on the third string of six. Tomsen competed for the Roslyn Rifle and Revolver Club at the time of the 1948 Olympics. Two of his later clubs, Stratford Police Athletic League Rifle Club and the Bell City Rifle Club, later donated the Walter Tomsen Memorial Trophy, a bronze falcon on a marble base, atop a wooden stand, which is given to the highest scoring senior competitor in the national small-bore prone championships.
