In addition to her day job as a machinist Edna Davey represented the North Sydney Swimming Club at competitive swim meets. Davey was a strong swimmer but her father feared she would not be selected to represent Australia at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics due to the cost of sending her to Europe. Thankfully she made it to the Amsterdam Games where she swam in the 100 and 400 metres freestyle. Back in Australia she set several records, including a world record in the 1,000 metres at the Domain Baths, Sydney in 1929. Davey’s son Graham Hamilton swam at the 1956 Melbourne Games, making them the first mother-and-son pair to compete for Australia in swimming at the Olympics.
