René Bauwens was Belgian champion in 200 m freestyle in 1914 and 1919 as well as in 400 m freestyle in 1914, 1919, and 1920 (no championships have been held from 1915 to 1918). He competed in two Olympics for Belgium in aquatic sports. In 1920 and 1928 he was on the water polo team and he also swam at the 1920 Olympics. Bauwens was coach of the Belgian water polo team at the 1948 Olympics in London.
