Hem Lumphat swam for Cambodia at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He was from a family of swimmers, as his sister, Hem Raksmey, also competed at Atlanta. Another sister, Hem Kiry, competed at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics, and a brother, Hem Thon Ponloeu, swam at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Their father, Hem Thon, had swum at the 1959 and 1962 Southeast Asian Peninsula Games.
Hem Lumphat’s daughter, Hem Thon Vitiny, later swam at the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympics. Hem Lumphat became coach of the Cambodian National Swim Team.
