Nergüin Enkhbat was born in Ulaanbaatar in 1962. In 1979, he took up boxing, and for the next 10 years represented the national team. During this time, he also graduated from the National University of Moscow in 1985. From 1982 to 1987, Enkhbat was a six-time national champion. The following year, Enkhbat won a bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the lightweight event. He retired from boxing in 1989 as the reigning Asian champion.
From 1989 to 1993, Enkhbat coached the national team, before he became a senior specialist for the Mongolian National Olympic Committee from 1999 to 2001. During his boxing career, Enkhbat took part in 312 fights, with more than 240 wins.
