Biography

Margaret Linton, better known as “Pip” was an outstanding freestyle swimmer as a teenager and at the age of 18 won the first of seven consecutive Welsh 440 yard titles. The runner-up in the 220- and 440 frestyle at the 1949 ASA Championships, she improved the following year to capture the 100 and 220 titles, retaining her 100 yard title in 1951.

In addition to winning Welsh titles in all three freestyle distances, Linton twice won the coveted Long Distance Swimming Championship of Wales, known as “The Taff Swim”, in 1949 (when fellow Maindee SC member John Brockway won the men’s title), and again in 1954. Linton competed in the 1948 and 1952 Olympics and the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver. When the next Games were held in Cardiff in 1958, Linton was an assistant press officer.
