A versatile swimmer who had his greatest successes in the 200 IM, Neil Cochran’s finest hour came at the 1984 Olympics where he narrowly defeated compatriot Robin Brew to a bronze medal in that event. Cochran gained another medal at the same Games when he swam the opening leg of 4x200 freestyle relay. He went on to win the World Student Games 200 IM title in 1985 and a silver medal in the relay at the 1987 European Championships. Cochran also represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games and was third in the 200 individual medley in 1986 on home soil in Edinburgh. He retired after the Seoul Olympics to concentrate on a career in engineering.
