Like all good swimmers of the day, Sydney Gooday was also a fine water polo player and played for both Thornton Heat SC and Zephyr SC. He worked for Stanford’s publishers and printers, and represented them in the 1906 Printing and Allied Trades Swimming Championship, finishing second in the 200 yards. He went on to win many local club titles at Thornton Heath, and also Croydon and district titles. Gooday gained selection for the 1908 Olympic 200 metres breaststroke after finishing second to Percy Courtman in the Olympic trial at the White City. Gooday enjoyed his only ASA podium when finishing third in the 200 yards breast in 1909, in a race won by Courtman for the third consecutive year. In 1910, Gooday swam the 50 yards in 26.8, just 1.8 seconds outside the world record. He emigrated to Canada in 1911 where he worked as a draughtsman and also continued his swimming career, and in 1920 represented his adopted country at the Antwerpen Olympics.
