A City of London policeman, George Innocent won the 1901 Islington 100 yards freestyle title at the age of 16. Before he had reached 20, he had won the South of England title, two national police quarter-mile titles and, in 1905, the first of three successive City of London police 100 yards titles. Innocent appeared at two Olympics, and his best result was in reaching the 400 breaststroke semi-final in 1912, but he failed to finish. After ending his police career, Innocent worked as a guard for the Bank of England.
