As a teenager, Frederick Naylor was predominantly a 440 yards freestyler, but also competed in half-mile events and the Long Distance Championship on the River Thames between Kew and Putney. He won the Southern Counties 440 yards free title in 1905. Naylor also played water polo for his club Hornsey; however, he was better known as a breaststroke swimmer, and in 1904 and 1905 won the national 150 yards title organised by the National Life Saving Society at Highgate Ponds. He was runner-up in the ASA 200 breaststroke in 1904 and 1907, but was the champion in 1906. He qualified for the 1908 Olympics after finishing second to Percy Courtman at the Olympic trial.
