Fred Stapleton was a co-opted member of the Osborne Swimming Club for the 1900 Paris Olympics. He was one of the forwards in the team that won the gold medal. He also competed in the 200 metres swimming obstacle race and 200 metres freestyle. Stapleton came from Nottingham, and was a lace manufacturer, an industry for which the city is famous.
