This was another unusual event, also held for the only time in Olympic history. There were three obstacles. The competitors first had to climb over a pole, then climb over a row of boats, and then swim under another row of boats. Fred Lane (GBR) won his second championship of the 1900 Olympic swimming events, although this was a close race between Lane and Austria’s Otto Wahle. Wahle was a well known Austrian swim coach who later coached in the United States, and also swam at the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis.
