Standing less than 1.60 cm tall, Billy Wood was dubbed “Wee” William by certain branches of the media. Despite his stature, Wood was second in the 1961 ASA boys diving competition and was third in that year´s senior men´s event won by Brian Phelps. A member if the Highgate Diving Club, Wood won the boys title in 1962, when he also made his Great Britain international début. He went on to represent England/Great Britain at the 1962 Commonwealth Games, 1963 European Diving Championships, and 1964 Olympic Games.
At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games at Perth, Australia, Wood was lying third after the six compulsory dives behind fellow Englishmen Phelps and Tony Kitcher. Sadly, Wood eventually finished fourth while his two compatriots won gold and bronze respectively. After his competitive diving days, Wood, alongside Brian Phelps and others, took part in comedy diving shows around Britain.
