Freestyle swimmer Ines Geißler surprisingly won the 200 metres butterfly at the 1980 Moskva Olympics ahead of her East German team-mate Sybille Schönrock. Geißler also finished seventh in the 800 free final. In 1981, she won the 200 butterfly European title and the following year added the world title. In 1981 she also won the East German nationals in this event, and in 1983 won another European title, this time in the 100 butterfly. In 1984 she retired as a result of not being able to participate at the Los Angeles Olympics due to the Soviet-led boycott.
After German re-unification it became known that Geißler’s performances should be viewed in a different light due to the systematic administration of illegal performance-enhancing substances by GDR sports officials, doctors and trainers. Geißler studied sports but withdrew during the time of re-unification. She then worked as a saleswoman in a boutique, and later joined her father’s woodwork company.
