East German swimmer Sybille Schönrock, a granddaughter of long-distance runner Walter Schönrock, won a surprising silver medal in the 200 metres butterfly at the 1980 Moskva Summer Games behind her team-mate Ines Geißler. This was her only international competition during her career. She later studied pedagogics and became a graduated teacher. After German re-unification she was employed as a youth care worker.
