Biography

Caren Metschuck had a short career with three years of high-performance butterfly and freestyle swimming from 1980-82, She then retired and became a school teacher. Metschuck won three golds and one silver medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and was the most successful female athlete at those Games. One year later she won three gold medals at the European Championships. This collection was completed by a 1982 gold and a 1978 silver medal at the World Championships in the 4×100 free relay.

In 1990 she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. After German reunification Metschuck worked as a coach in her home club SC Empor Rostock. Her daughter Antje Mahn also became a competitive swimmer.
