Let’s see. East German women would win the 100 freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke in Moscow. And all of those swimmers were available for them on the medley relay. So the only challenge for them was to see how fast they could go to win the gold medal, and they succeeded in breaking the world record with a mark of 4:06.67, led off by Rica Reinisch, who equalled the world record for the 100 backstroke on the opening leg. This was sufficient to lead the silver-medal winning British team by about 5½ seconds, although they set a Commonwealth record. The bronze went to the Soviet Union who set a national record.
