Heike Hustede-Nagel

Heike Hustede’s career lasted over three consecutive Olympic Games. She started her Olympic appearances in 1964 with the mixed German team, finishing sixth in the 100 butterfly. She also swam on the medley relay team that was disqualified in the final. Four years later in Mexico City, then representing West Germany, she claimed the bronze medal with the medley relay, and placed sixth and fifth in the 100 and 200 fly, respectively. In 1972 at München, she came back under her married name Nagel, but was eliminated in the semifinals of the 100 butterfly.

Between 1963 and 1972 Hustede-Nagel claimed 30 national West German titles in different distances and events. In 1966 she earned a silver medal at the European Championships in Utrecht in the 100 butterfly, losing out to Dutch swimmer Ada Kok. In 1970 Hustede-Nagel earned another European bronze medal in the medley relay. In 1968 she was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. She trained as an industrial clerk.
