Medley swimmer Patrick Kühl represented East Germany at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and won the silver medal over 200 metres. Over 400 metres he finished fifth, and four years later at Barcelona, was sixth, now representing re-unified Germany. He also won two silvers (1989, 1991) and one bronze medal (1987) at European Championships, all over 400 metres IM. From 1986-90 Kühl won the East German 400 metres IM national title and, in 1990, a German one. He became a bank clerk by profession.
