Carlo Bonfanti was one of the first competitive divers in Italy. When he first started the sport, it was regarded more as entertainment than sport, but his exploits at the 1906, and then the 1908 and 1912 Olympics, changed all that as he showed what a competitive sport it was. After his retirement Bonfanti was, for many years, an instructor in Milano. He died in 1933 of a heart attack while mountain climbing.
