Japanese swimmer Haruo Yoshimuta had an impressive record at the Summer Universiade, winning six golds at two editions of the competition in the early 1960s. In 1960 Yoshimuta won the 200 metres butterfly title at the national championships to qualify for the Olympics, finishing fifth in the final of the same event at the Roma Games. His gold medal haul at the Summer Universiade began the following year, winning an individual title in the 200 metres butterfly, along with team golds in both the 4 x 100 metres freestyle and 4 x 100 metres medley relays. Yoshimuta returned to the Universiade two years later and took gold in the 400 and 1,500 metres freestyle, and another relay gold in the 4 x 100 metres freestyle. He was then selected to swim in the 400 metres freestyle at his home Olympics in Tokyo, but finished a disappointing 17th. Yoshimuta added a further gold to his tally when he was part of the quartet that won the 4 × 200 metres freestyle relay title at the 1966 Asian Games in Bangkok.
