Kim Bong-Jo swam at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, but did not get out of the first round in either the 100 or 400 metre freestyle events. Kim also swam at the 1962 Asian Games. Kim later became a swim coach. He was chairman of the Korean Swimming Federation, director of the Korean national team, and helped coach Korean distance star Park Tae-Hwan. Kim was also President of the Namkang Cultural Foundation.
