Tullik Helsing was born in Meldal, where her father worked in the mining industry. Her family moved to Oslo when she was a schoolgirl, and she started with diving. Aged only 15, she won her first national title in platform diving in 1934, a feat that she repeated the following year. In 1936, she was selected for the Olympics as the youngest on the Norwegian team. She was also a decent tennis player. She quit diving after the Olympics, married in the late 1930s and gave birth to two children.
