In August 1960 Herlander Ribeiro became the first Portuguese to swim the 100 metres freestyle in under a minute, doing so in 59.60 seconds. This performance earned Ribeiro a place on the national team for the Roma Olympics where he finished in 37th place in the same event. He was also part of the relay team in the 4 × 100 metres medley relay in Roma, where Portugal finished last of the 18 teams to compete.
