In March 1976 McDonald was part of first team from Newfoundland and Labrador to win the Brier, the annual Canadian men’s curling championship. Later the same month he represented Canada at the World Curling Championships in Duluth, Minnesota. Following the World Championships, McDonald then made sporadic appearances at the Brier, competing in 1979, 1981, 1992, 1998, and 2002.
