Waldo Santiago took up boxing at a young age, becoming a regional champion in Cuba in the early 1960s. Santiago then focused on officiating matches, serving as a commissioner of the Cuban Boxing Federation from 1965 to 1980 and eventually becoming the federation’s President. During this period, he worked as a judge or referee at both the 1968 and 1972 Olympics, officiating in more than 120 matches across the two Games.
Santiago also worked with the International Boxing Association (IBA), becoming a Vice-President, in addition to leading the Pan American Boxing Confederation. He also worked as a coach for both the Cuban youth and national teams, training at a high-performance centre in the country.
