William Smith first started his career in ice skating when he represented the Tulsa Figure Skating Club before going to college. Whilst at college Smith became a competitive judge, a role that he continued with throughout his life. After graduating he worked at a service drilling company in Tulsa, Oklahoma, eventually becoming the company’s chairman of the board. Smith held multiple posts in Tulsa including being the director of the Tulsa Boys Home, the Tulsa Ballet Theatre, and the vice-chair of the YMCA of Greater Tulsa.
As an ice skating judge Smith travelled around the world to officiate in multiple competitions. He served as the Vice-President of United States Figure Skating where he was honoured for more than 50 years’ service as judge. Smith was a judge and referee at multiple editions of the World Championships and was a judge at the 2006 Torino Olympics.
