Lajos Tihamér was born Lajos Prantl and attended school in Nuremberg and Budapest. He then studied law at Péter Pázmány University in Budapest. In 1901 he changed his name to Tihamér. He was then appointed to the National General Inspectorate of Museums and Libraries. During World War I, he served on the Russian and Italian fronts until the collapse. After the end of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy, he became a consultant for museum affairs at the Ministry of Religion and Public Education. Later he was transferred to the Art Department as a Fine Arts Officer, where he also performed the duties of managing correspondent of the Hungarian National Council for Fine Arts, and for a time also served as the Ministry’s Music and Chief Press Officer. In 1934, he was appointed executive director of the National Council for Literature and the Arts. In this position, he served as a jury member of the 1936 art competitions.
